About cafe sounds
Best for

Writing and conceptual work. Real research (the so-called "coffee shop effect") shows that moderate background chatter at around 70 decibels improves performance on creative tasks compared to silence or loud noise.

Why cafe sounds help you focus

The "coffee shop effect" is one of the few ambient-sound findings with real published research behind it. A landmark 2012 study at the University of British Columbia found that moderate background chatter — around 70 decibels, roughly the volume of a conversation across a busy room — improved performance on creative tasks compared to either silence or loud noise.

The mechanism: voices you cannot quite make out create a small cognitive load that keeps the brain in a more abstract, associative mode of thinking. Silence lets the brain go too literal. Loud, comprehensible voices distract entirely. Indistinct chatter sits in the sweet spot.

This is why so many writers, designers, and founders work from coffee shops by choice, even when they have a perfectly quiet office available.

When to use cafe sounds

  • Writing. Long-form drafting, blog posts, essays, reports.
  • Brainstorming. Generating ideas, mapping concepts.
  • Strategic thinking. Anything requiring associative leaps rather than linear execution.
  • When silence feels too loud. The "I cannot focus, the room is too quiet" feeling is real for some people. Cafe ambience fixes it.

When cafe sounds will not help

  • Tasks requiring tight focus on a single text or number (proofreading, accounting, debugging).
  • If you find chatter triggers your brain to try to listen in. Try forest or rain instead.

Tips

  • Volume matters more than with other sounds. Cafe should sit just below the level of your own thoughts. Too loud and you start parsing the chatter; too quiet and the effect disappears.
  • Pair with longer focus blocks. Cafe works better for 45 to 90-minute sessions than tight 25-minute Pomodoros.
  • Combine with a hot drink. The full cafe ritual — sound plus warm cup plus the specific posture of "working from a cafe" — is more powerful than the sound alone.
